Frp for Retrofitting and Strengthening of Concrete Structures

The use of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) for retrofitting and strengthening concrete structures provides an attractive and economical solution to increasing their strength and ductility. This paper reviews some of the Canadian projects which have been completed using this material. The selected projects are sponsored by the Canadian Network of Centres of Excellence on Intelligent Sensing for Innovative Structures (ISIS Canada), and illustrate the current experience and interest in this field in Canada. In each field application project, a description of the strengthening technique used to increase their flexural and/or shear capacity is discussed. The main techniques discussed include attaching FRP sheets and strips, as well as FRP bars embedded into grooves in the tension zones of flexural members.
